I was watching The Hour and Yann Martel was the first guest. He mostly talked about his book project, where every two weeks he was sending a book to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, criteria being: short, under 200 pages, in English, and easily comprehensible. I wondered what I would send, and my first thought was One Day in The Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn. I read it a couple months back; it depicts the terrible circumstances in a gulag in Soviet Era Communist Russia. It’s good reading I tells ya. Anyhow, it was Martel’s last pick before he invited other writers to take over the project reins.
I’ve read some of the books, but there’s lots that I haven’t. I’m gonna check this list next time I go to the library. I think I’ll start with Generation A, or maybe Ivan Ilich. I’m might have started that Tolstoy but I don’t think I finished it - in any case, it’s often a good idea to start at the beginning….especially when it comes to novels. :P
